Gold Prices Predicted to Hit $4,900 on Central Bank Demand
Gold prices are expected to reach $4,900 per troy ounce by year-end according to Goldman Sachs analysts. The prediction is based on increased demand from central banks, which will continue their trend of diversifying their reserves in response to geopolitical and financial risks.
The analysts, Lina Thomas and Daan Struyven, pointed out that central banks have been purchasing gold at an accelerated rate, with 50 tonnes per month expected this year, a nearly 300% increase from the pre-2022 level of 17 tonnes per month. This trend is consistent with recent survey evidence showing central banks' increasing interest in gold as a hedge against risks.
The analysts also expect a stable rate environment to contribute to the price rise, as gold tends to perform well when interest rates are low or steady. Additionally, they mentioned that the 'debasement trade' narrative could push gold prices higher than their forecasted level, as investors become more cautious about Western fiscal sustainability.
