Gold Prices Retreat Amid US Inflation Data Anticipation
Gold prices retreated on Tuesday after hitting their highest levels in more than three months earlier in the day. The metal's value dropped by 0.2% to $4,640.39 per ounce as of 0334 GMT, while U.S. gold futures steadied at $4,696.00.
The decline comes as investors await upcoming U.S. inflation data and a speech later this week by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the annual Jackson Hole conference.
Despite the dip, analysts predict that gold will remain well-supported due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and fears of currency debasement. According to Tony Sycamore, an IG market analyst, 'we expect dips in gold to be well-supported from buyers looking for gold to make its way towards the next upside resistance at $4,900/$5,000.'
However, TD Securities notes that elevated interest rates could potentially curb the metal's appeal as a non-yielding asset. The U.S. Treasury Department's announcement last week to double the size of liquidity support buyback operations for longer-dated notes and bonds sparked currency debasement fears.
