Gold Prices Slide as Oil Advances Amid Inflation Worries
Gold prices declined on Tuesday as higher U.S. Treasury yields and rising oil prices weighed on bullion. The metal dropped 0.3% to $4,403.37 an ounce, while platinum fell by a similar margin to $4,457.20 an ounce.
The rally in gold prices has been hampered by the increase in the benchmark oil price, which raises the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding metals like gold.
A stronger dollar also dented the appeal of gold, making it more expensive for overseas buyers.
Meanwhile, oil prices advanced due to concerns over a potential Middle East conflict and its impact on energy markets. Lingering uncertainty around this issue has kept energy markets volatile, adding to inflation worries.
Despite these factors, markets have reduced expectations for a September rate hike after recent data showed unexpected job losses and softer-than-expected consumer inflation in July.
