Gold Prices Slump as Treasury Yields and Oil Prices Converge
International gold prices have been experiencing sharp volatility due to converging headwinds from surging U.S. Treasury yields and rising oil prices. On Tuesday, spot gold tumbled 1.86% to $4,334.57 per ounce, its largest single-day decline in nearly a month.
The dual pressure of elevated Treasury yields and Middle East tensions driving oil prices higher has intensified concerns about inflation. Bank of America analysts note that current buying volumes correspond to a gold price of around $4,000, and that pushing beyond $5,000 would require investment demand growth of 21% year-over-year.
Despite the short-term pressure, market analysts believe gold needs a period of consolidation to digest elevated valuations and rate pressures. The Federal Reserve's upcoming release of July meeting minutes is expected to provide insight into policymakers' views on inflation, labor markets, and potential second-round effects from energy prices.
