Gold Prices Soar Amid Economic Uncertainty and Inflation
The price of gold has skyrocketed over the past two years, causing sticker shock for those looking to propose with a traditional gold ring. To understand what drove this pricing surge, FactSet Insight analyzed the various sectors of the gold industry.
They found that from 2012-2023, the price of gold futures remained relatively stable, staying within 30% of its benchmark 2012 value. Gold mining and futures prices moved in tandem during this period, while broad market mining was influenced by other component materials and showed strong independent movement.
However, from 2023 onwards, there has been a significant increase in the price of gold, driven by economic uncertainty, inflation, and a weakening USD. This led to increased central bank purchases, causing gold mining prices to rise as well. The private portfolio of funds showed steady increases in net investment over the sample period, but its response to the recent market swing was muted.
Looking ahead, FactSet Insight expects a continued stall in private interest due to elevated gold prices and robust demand for broad minerals from the tech sector. However, there is also a risk that economic uncertainty could stall industrial demand and decrease overall mineral demand.
