Gold Prices Soar Amidst Rate Hike Uncertainty
The gold market has experienced its sharpest weekly advance since January, reaching a key technical threshold. The surprising weak July jobs report triggered a rapid repricing of Federal Reserve rate expectations, sending bullion prices to a 7.39% gain for the week.
This comes after what had been a prolonged period of base-building, with spot gold closing at $4,401.40 per ounce on Friday. The market's attention is now focused on the next technical hurdle: the $4,500 region.
The weak July jobs report showed a loss of 23,000 nonfarm payrolls, compared to the 85,000 gain economists had predicted. This led to a decrease in the implied probability of a September rate hike from 54% to roughly 44%, making gold more attractive as an investment.
However, despite the strength in the price action, there is still a notable divergence beneath the surface. Western institutional investors have yet to return to gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in a meaningful way, and the rally's durability may hinge on whether that changes.
