Gold prices surged in August, rising by 12.2% to £3369 per troy ounce in the UK, marking one of its strongest monthly price rises in a decade.

This significant increase drew in heavy demand from private investors, with BullionVault's global client base buying 128 kilograms more gold than it sold, amounting to a net purchase of £13.5 million.

The total holdings on the platform grew by 0.3% in weight to reach 43.6 tonnes worth £4.7 billion, indicating that investors are taking advantage of lower prices to add to their gold reserves.

BullionVault's director of research, Adrian Ash, attributes this demand to 'deep worries over the size of government debt and the threat of debasement', pointing out that long-term bond yields have hit new multi-decade highs.
