Gold Prices Soar as US-Iran Tensions Ease

Gold prices surged past $4100 per ounce on August 5, with gold-related stocks in Chinese markets rising significantly. The catalyst for this move was a reported agreement between the US and Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transportation corridors.

The easing of tensions led to a sharp drop in international oil prices, with Brent crude falling by over 6% overnight. This decrease in oil prices eased pressure on energy inflation, prompting market expectations for subsequent Federal Reserve interest rate hikes to decline from 68% to 59%.

As the probability of Fed rate hikes decreased, the opportunity cost of holding gold also declined, and US Treasury yields dropped accordingly. The favorable environment for gold was further reinforced by the Federal Open Market Committee's decision in July to keep interest rates unchanged at 3.5-3.75%, which revealed internal rifts within the Fed.

The divergence within the Fed means that even if they don't cut rates, further hikes will face growing resistance. The slowdown in rate hike expectations itself constitutes positive news for gold, as well as the Fed Chairman's acknowledgment that inflation decline is a long-term process.
