Gold Prices Soar on Weaker US Jobs Report and Easing Middle East Tensions

Gold and silver prices have surged to their highest levels in months due to a combination of factors. The precious metals climbed 7.4% and 10.2%, respectively, last week, with gold reaching $4,342 an ounce and silver hitting around $65.

The drivers behind this rally are not the typical fear-based expectations. Instead, investors seem to be pricing in a recovery from recent market stressors. A weak US jobs report has cooled expectations of a September interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve, making metals more appealing than cash and bonds.

Additionally, tentative signs of de-escalation in the Middle East have eased inflation pressure on central banks, further contributing to the rally. Lower rate odds and calmer geopolitics are a favorable mix for precious metals.

The surge is not entirely without warning, however. Analysts note that even during the height of market stress, gold refused to fall below $3,400 an ounce, indicating that investors had already absorbed the bad news. With oil still above $80 a barrel, some believe that a slide towards $70 could unlock further gains.

However, analysts caution that there are potential headwinds ahead, including a stubborn ceiling at $4,400 an ounce and a strong US dollar, which historically weakens gold prices when it rises. Geopolitical tensions remain a concern, as some warn that a lasting Hormuz agreement is unlikely.
