Gold Prices Steady Ahead of Jackson Hole Speech
Gold prices maintained their steady pace on Thursday, following the previous day's minor decline. The precious metal saw a slight increase of 0.06% to $4,594.82 per ounce by 1502 GMT. US gold futures for December delivery, meanwhile, slipped 0.1% to $4,648.60.
Market analysts attribute the stability in gold prices to the anticipation of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole. Traders are awaiting his roadmap on inflation and monetary policy, which is expected to provide clarity on the Fed's strategy. 'We're just seeing some mild profit-taking pressure from the shorter-term futures traders ahead of Friday morning's speech by Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Symposium,' said Jim Wyckoff, a market analyst.
The recent rally in gold prices has been driven by concerns over dollar debasement following the US Treasury's move to ramp up buybacks of older long-dated bonds. However, expectations of a September US rate hike have decreased to 34%, while there remains a 74% chance of a hike by December.
The data on Wednesday showed that the US Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index increased 3.7% in the 12 months through July, remaining unchanged from June. This has led some investors to anticipate further rate hikes, which could potentially dampen gold's appeal due to its lack of yield.
