Gold Prices Supported by Weak US Economic Data, But Long-Term Headwinds Persist

The World Gold Council (WGC) uses a classical multi-factor pricing model to assess gold prices, focusing on four key dimensions: U.S. inflation and expectations for Federal Reserve policy, real U.S. Treasury yields as the opportunity cost, the strength of the U.S. dollar, and geopolitical risks and capital-flow momentum.

The Fed's monetary policy trajectory serves as the central pricing anchor for gold, while policy expectations are shaped by inflation and economic data. Recent U.S. inflation continues to ease, with the PPI falling more sharply than expected, while retail sales have weakened markedly and consumer confidence has declined.

This has eased market concerns about continued monetary tightening, capped the upside for nominal interest rates, and helped restore gold's valuation. The WGC notes that although the minutes of this week's FOMC meeting contained potentially hawkish language, weak economic data released afterward have come to dominate market expectations.

The WGC also emphasizes that the sustained rise in long-term interest rates will remain the key headwind restraining any sharp, one-sided rally in gold prices. The current gold rebound is seen as a corrective move rather than the start of a sustained bull market.
