Gold Prices Surge Above $4,400/oz Amid Weak US Jobs Report
The US economy's disappointing July jobs report has sent gold futures soaring above $4,400 per ounce. The Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed a loss of 23,000 nonfarm payroll jobs, far below the expected gain of 80,000.
This miss is considered historically bad and has led to concerns about the state of the economy. Two consecutive months of effectively zero or negative job creation are causing investors to shift their narratives from 'soft landing' to 'are we even landing at all?'
The ADP private-sector payrolls number, released a day earlier, already showed only 44,000 jobs added in July against expectations. The gold price had been trading within a wide band between $4,067 and $4,359 per ounce throughout early August.
Gold's connection to the Federal Reserve is key here. When employment weakens, the pressure on the Fed to cut rates intensifies. Lower interest rates reduce the opportunity cost of holding gold, which pays no yield.
Markets are already repricing expectations for the Fed's next moves, with the futures curve shifting toward rate cuts in the immediate aftermath of the report. This is a direct tailwind for gold.
