Gold Prices Surge Amid Debasement Trade Resurgence

The gold market is experiencing renewed momentum after a months-long correction that saw prices drop 30% from their all-time highs.

Gold prices have started the week with a push toward $4,700 an ounce and are currently trading at their highest level in 15 weeks.

Analysts attribute this surge to a resurgence of the debasement trade following the U.S. Treasury's announcement that it would buy long-dated bonds to reduce borrowing costs.

Bart Melek, Head of Commodity Strategy at TD Securities, notes that investors are worried about America's fiscal situation after its debt surpassed $40 trillion last week.

Although gold may continue to respond to the weaker USD, Melek cautions that the precious metal still faces potential headwinds due to rising energy prices driving inflation fears higher.
