Gold Prices Surge Amid US-Iran Tensions, But Inflation Data Looms Large
The global financial markets are experiencing a surge in gold and silver prices as investors seek safe-haven assets amid escalating US-Iran tensions. Spot gold traded near $4,417.87, up 1.46%, while spot silver was at $67.37, up 2.46%. The US dollar weakened against major currencies, making gold and silver cheaper for buyers holding other currencies.
The recent attacks on US warships in the Gulf of Oman have led to a significant increase in oil prices, with Brent crude trading at $100.72 a barrel and WTI crude rising to $95.70. However, Treasury yields stayed elevated, with the 10-year yield near 4.81%, which typically puts pressure on non-yielding assets like gold and silver.
The markets are currently pricing a 60% chance of a 25-basis-point rate hike by the Federal Reserve at its meeting on September 15-16. Two key inflation readings this week, the Producer Price Index on Thursday and the Consumer Price Index on Friday, will test this outlook. A hotter-than-expected reading would likely keep yields elevated and cap the metals' rally.
