Gold Prices Surge as ETF Flows Rebound and Rate Cut Speculation Returns
The price of gold has rebounded to levels not seen in roughly two months, closing at $4,443.70 per troy ounce on Tuesday.
This uptick is attributed to a significant shift in investor behavior, with money flowing back into gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) after four consecutive months of outflows.
Global gold ETFs absorbed $3 billion in fresh inflows during July, pushing total assets under management up 1 percent to $530 billion. Europe was the largest contributor, adding $2 billion worth of bullion, while Britain and Switzerland also saw significant purchases.
The employment report for July had a disappointing outcome, with the economy shedding 23,000 jobs - a stark reversal from the expected gain of 85,000. This has put rate-cut speculation back on the table ahead of the Federal Reserve's September meeting.
