Gold Prices Tumble Amid Rising Treasury Yields and Surging Oil
Gold prices took a hit on Tuesday as Treasury yields rose and oil prices surged. The precious metal's value was further pressured by Iran's decision to shift its military posture, which raised concerns about regional stability. As a result, gold futures for December delivery dropped 0.6% to $4,446.70 per ounce.
The U.S. Federal Reserve's July policy meeting minutes are expected to provide crucial insights into the central bank's interest rate outlook. Traders are closely watching market pricing for a September quarter-point hike, which has flipped to a nearly 65% chance of a 'hold' following recent economic data. This shift in expectations is contributing to gold's decline.
ANZ analyst Soni Kumari noted that oil prices will remain a key factor influencing gold prices as long as the situation in the Middle East remains uncertain. Elevated energy prices tend to raise inflationary fears and bolster expectations of higher interest rates by the Fed, which can diminish gold's appeal.
