Gold Purity and Prices: Understanding Karats and Market Influences

The gold purity is measured in karats, and it depends on its intended use. For investment in coins and bars, 24K (99.9%) is the purest form, but too soft for jewelry. On the other hand, 22K (91.6%) is standard for traditional Indian jewelry as it's alloyed with other metals for durability.

The daily gold rate online is just a benchmark, and the final showroom price will be higher due to making charges, which vary by design and are often negotiable, plus a 3% GST. Additionally, in studded jewelry, the weight of embedded stones is excluded when calculating the net gold weight for pricing.

For those who want to invest without physical storage or making charges, there are alternatives such as digital gold, which enables purchase of small quantities online starting from Re 1. Other options include gold ETFs & Mutual Funds and Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs), which offer a fixed annual interest rate on top of standard gold price appreciation.
