Gold Regains Momentum Despite Higher Interest Rates

Gold prices have regained momentum after a period of consolidation, leading to increased returns for gold-related exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The precious metal has strengthened despite higher interest rates, which typically reduce demand for non-yielding assets like gold. However, concerns over U.S. fiscal conditions and the growing Treasury supply are driving up demand for gold as a safe haven.

According to data from August 20, December gold futures on the COMEX division of the New York Mercantile Exchange closed at $4,571.40 per ounce, marking the highest level since late May. The settlement represented a 0.6% increase from the previous session and a 13% climb over just over a month.

The rally is notable given that gold has continued to strengthen even as long-term U.S. interest rates have surged, briefly reaching 5.31% on August 17, its highest level since 2007. Typically, rising rates increase the relative attractiveness of yield-bearing assets like bonds. However, factors driving long-term yields higher, concerns over the U.S. fiscal burden and growing Treasury issuance, are reinforcing gold's appeal as an alternative to dollar-denominated assets and a safe haven.
