Gold-Silver Ratio Hits 70:1 Amid Shift in Demand Dynamics

The gold-silver ratio has been rising to around 70:1 after the 2026 metals crash, prompting many commentators to predict a silver rebound. However, a closer look at the data suggests that this ratio is not an anomaly to be arbitraged, but rather a reflection of the underlying demand dynamics in both metals.

According to the Silver Institute's World Silver Survey 2026, 58% of silver demand is industrial, making it rate-sensitive. This contrasts with gold, which has a stable buyer in central banks, particularly the People's Bank of China on a 20-month buying streak.

The ratio at 70:1 reflects the policy backdrop set by the Federal Reserve, which cut its 2026 rate-cut projection from two to one in June. This shock was more severe for silver, which lost 52% of its value from its January record, compared to gold's 28% decline.

The classic playbook for trading the ratio involves switching between gold and silver based on whether the ratio is above or below certain thresholds. However, this approach has been shown to be imperfect, as demonstrated by the recent experience with the ratio at 91 in August last year.
