Gold Soars as Dollar, Yields Fall Amid Treasury Intervention
The price of gold rose sharply on Wednesday as investors sought safe-haven assets following a drop in the US dollar and yields. Spot prices reached $4,508.28 per ounce, their highest level since May 29.
The US Treasury Department's decision to increase buyback operations for long-dated bonds provided significant relief to bond markets, causing yields on the 30-year benchmark bond to fall by 9.2 basis points to 5.193%.
This move, combined with the Federal Reserve's minutes from its July meeting, which showed policymakers concerned about inflation and considering rate hikes, contributed to gold's surge. Traders snapped up bonds in response to the Treasury's intervention, which lowered yields and made other assets less attractive by comparison.
