Gold Soars as Washington's Debt Burden Hits $40 Trillion

The gold market is experiencing a significant rally, with prices sitting at $4,658.41 per ounce and an 11% gain above its 50-day moving average. This momentum is being driven by record central bank buying and the US government's growing debt burden, which has surpassed $40 trillion for the first time.

The combination of these factors has turned gold into a two-front trade, with investors seeking to hedge against both fiscal and geopolitical stress. The recent doubling of liquidity purchases for 10- to 30-year government bonds by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent aims to cap long-end yields and contain the interest burden on the expanding debt pile.

Record ETF inflows are signaling a shift in investor behavior, with the SPDR Gold Shares fund recording $1.19 billion in daily inflows, lifting its assets under management to $150.9 billion. Central banks purchased 288.9 tonnes of gold in the second quarter, a 62% jump from last year's same period.

HSBC's chief precious metals analyst James Steel sees the trend as constructive, while warning about short-term oil price shocks from Middle East tensions. Swissquote analyst Ipek Ozkardeskaya frames gold as essential insurance against unclear US fiscal plans and potential encroachment on Federal Reserve independence.
