Gold Soars to Two-Week High as Labor Market Weakens and Oil Prices Fall

Gold's price surged to a two-week high on Wednesday, reaching $4,170.755 and touching $4,234.17 at its highs, before settling near $4,136.78 with a bid of $4,137.52 and an ask of $4,137.86.

The metal's rally was driven by a combination of factors, including the Middle East de-escalating, oil prices falling, and a weakening labor market. These inputs would have been headwinds for gold in the past but are now contributing to its rise.

However, this shift also creates a specific condition for the bull case: a permanent diplomatic resolution to the Hormuz conflict is necessary to sustain disinflation and reverse rate expectations. A 60-day shipping arrangement or a negotiation that collapses back into escalation would send oil higher, hike odds higher, and gold lower.

The labor market data released on Wednesday was another key driver of gold's price increase, with private payrolls increasing by 44,000 in July, below the consensus estimate of 75,000. This deceleration complicates the case for further tightening and adds to the rate-expectation move that is boosting gold.
