Gold Struggles Near $4,300 as Fed Hike Looms
Gold prices are hovering near $4,300 as markets await Wednesday's Federal Reserve meeting. With a nearly certain seventh straight rate hike on the horizon, gold is facing increased pressure from higher yields and a stronger dollar.
The current setup for gold is neutral to bearish, with geopolitical tensions in the Middle East providing some support but being overshadowed by rising inflation expectations and monetary policy pressures. Key technical levels for gold include support at $4,267 and resistance at $4,316-$4,356, with a bearish outlook prevailing unless prices exceed these resistance levels.
The 10-year Treasury yield has crossed the 5% threshold, adding to the pressure on gold. The dollar is near its two-week high due to increased JATS, resulting in higher oil prices and a stronger yield in the U.S. This combination creates a significant challenge for gold: higher yields + stronger dollar + almost certain Fed hike.
Middle East tensions continue to disrupt Gulf shipping and threaten Saudi and regional energy infrastructure, normally supporting safe-haven demand for gold. However, this conflict creates a difficult feedback loop, with higher geopolitical risk pushing oil prices up and increasing inflation expectations, which in turn strengthens the case for additional Fed tightening.
