Gold Surges 15%, Silver Jumps 19% as Market Value Nears $5 Trillion
Gold has experienced a significant surge in August, rising by about 15% and silver by nearly 19%. This sharp increase has led to a substantial rise in their combined market value, nearing $5 trillion according to analysis of the Bull Theory cited by Yahoo Finance. The rally is being driven by various factors, including expectations of US monetary policy, geopolitical tensions, a weaker dollar, central bank buying, and inflation concerns.
Silver also has an added advantage due to solid industrial demand and dwindling physical supplies. New technologies such as AI data centers, advanced electronics, and electrical-grid modernization are increasingly dependent on silver, putting additional strain on available supplies.
The latest rally was sparked by the US Treasury's decision to increase its long-term bond buyback program to $4 billion per session from $2 billion. This move prompted investors to reduce bearish positions, leading to short-covering in gold and silver, followed by fresh speculative buying that boosted the rally momentum.
Gold gains are also being supported by safe-haven demand rising due to continued conflict, including with Iran, causing concerns about stability in the region and energy prices. In times of war, financial instability, and economic uncertainty, investors often turn to gold as a safe-haven asset.
