Gold Surges 5%, Fed Jobs Report Looms as Key Hurdle
Gold prices have surged this week, rising by over 5% to reach a seven-week high on Thursday. Spot gold climbed to $4,262.39 an ounce in early trade, while US gold futures gained 0.5% to $4,321.50.
The rally is partly attributed to a reversal of the forces that hurt the metal earlier this year, specifically surging energy prices. Brent crude rebounded about 1% to $83.38 a barrel on Friday but remains headed for a weekly decline of roughly 7.5%. This has reduced fears of another energy-driven inflation shock and eased some pressure on interest-rate expectations.
The Federal Reserve's next move is crucial in determining gold's direction. A weaker jobs report could pull Treasury yields lower, reducing expectations for tighter policy and supporting bullion through lower yields. In contrast, a stronger reading would risk reviving the higher-for-longer trade and putting renewed pressure on gold.
