Gold Surges Past $4,400 Amid Dovish Fed Expectations
Gold prices have kicked off the week on an upward trend, reaching $4,400 after experiencing a 0.5% gain. This increase extends last Friday's gains and has some market watchers questioning whether precious metals are betting on a dovish Federal Reserve ahead of upcoming policy decisions.
The U.S. macroeconomic data released over the weekend showed unexpected declines in retail sales and weaker consumer sentiment, as indicated by the University of Michigan survey. While these figures were met with some disappointment following more reassuring inflation reports from July's CPI and PPI releases, gold seems to be responding positively to reduced expectations of hawkish monetary policy.
Looking at technical charts, gold appears to have halted its decline around a Fibonacci retracement level of 23.6%, which is significant in the context of recent price action. The RSI (Relative Strength Index) and MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) indicators suggest there may be room for further gains, but an important resistance level near $4,600 could pose a challenge to gold's upward momentum.
On the daily chart, the $4,300 area holds considerable importance due to the presence of the 200-session EMA200 (Exponential Moving Average) and its proximity to recent price action. A potential resumption of the upward trend could give gold considerable room to rise if expectations around Fed and ECB policy become more dovish and oil prices decline toward $70-$80 per barrel.
