Gold Tests $4,500-An-Ounce Area Amid Complex Macro Backdrop
Gold's recent surge has been anything but smooth, with prices reaching record territory before correcting due to a strengthening US dollar and shifting rate expectations. However, August saw another sharp rebound, with gold now testing the $4,500-an-ounce area.
The recovery comes against an increasingly complex macro backdrop, with investors weighing the outlook for US interest rates and real yields alongside renewed concerns over government debt, fiscal policy, and the Treasury's expanded long-dated bond buybacks.
Rick Kanda, Managing Director at The Gold Bullion Company, notes that a mixture of falling or stabilizing real yields, along with a weaker US dollar, and strong investment demand would be needed for gold to break sustainably above $4,500/oz.
Kanda also emphasizes the importance of central-bank and ETF demand, stating that 'a stronger US dollar and a shift in expectations towards US rates could potentially make this harder to sustain.'
