Gold Ticks Higher as Traders Wait on US Jobs Data and Fed Decision
Gold prices ticked higher on Wednesday as the US dollar eased, but traders remained cautious ahead of this week's US jobs data and the Federal Reserve's next decision.
The spot price of gold hovered near $4,081 an ounce, while US gold futures were around $4,137. This split signal uncertainty about where interest rates are headed next.
A softer dollar can lift dollar-priced metals by making them cheaper for overseas buyers, but the bigger force at play is the interest-rate outlook. Markets are watching the ADP private-payrolls release and Friday's July jobs report for clues on whether the Fed tightens again.
Traders are pricing about 57% odds of a hike at the September 15-16 meeting. This matters more than today's gold price, as investors expect higher policy rates to make holding non-yielding assets like gold less attractive.
