Gold Trades within Narrow Range as Global Capital Adjusts to Changing Risks
Gold prices have been relatively stable over the past week, trading within a narrow range of $4,022 to $4,150 per ounce. According to Dorex, this stability is reflective of gold's role as a store of value in times of changing geopolitical and economic conditions.
The metal briefly surged above $4,150 on Wednesday due to bargain buying following last week's weakness and renewed tensions in the Middle East. However, this rally was short-lived as rising oil prices led markets to reassess interest rate expectations from the US Federal Reserve.
Despite daily price fluctuations, gold continues to demonstrate its characteristics as a global store of value. It responds to shifting capital flows, inflation expectations, currency movements, and geopolitical uncertainty, as seen in the ongoing transition away from leveraged retail 'paper gold' products in China.
Dorex CEO John Kochanski noted that periods of consolidation are normal in long-term bull markets, citing record sovereign debt, continued central bank buying, and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty as factors supporting gold's investment case.
