Gold Trading Platform Check: Regulation, Costs, and Instruments Matter
When choosing a gold trading platform, there are several key factors to consider. The first check is regulation, who regulates the provider and which entity will hold your account? A regulated provider must follow rules on how client money is held, how much capital it keeps, how it discloses costs and risks, and how it handles complaints.
Look past the brand name to the legal entity named in the client agreement. This entity's regulator sets the rules that apply to your account. Two customers of the same brand, living in different countries, can be onboarded by different entities and receive very different protections.
The second check is the cost of trading gold on a platform. Headline spreads are often advertised as the most important cost, but they may not give a complete picture. The full cost of trading gold includes the spread, commission, overnight financing, currency conversion, and non-trading fees.
The third check is which gold instruments and contract sizes are available. 'Trading gold' can mean very different products, and platforms differ in which they offer. Some providers may offer spot gold CFDs, gold futures, gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs), or gold mining shares.
