Gold Treads Water Near $4,400 as US Economic Data Fails to Impress

Gold prices edged closer to $4,400 an ounce as traders weighed the Federal Reserve's interest-rate path following weak US economic data. The latest figures showed declines in consumer sentiment and retail sales, easing fears of an imminent rate hike that typically hurts gold.

The University of Michigan's preliminary August sentiment index fell to 51, below the median forecast of 55 from economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Retail sales dropped in July by the most in over a year, adding to the cooling trend. Despite this, the risk of monetary tightening remains due to rising oil prices after the US threatened economic measures against Iran.

Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President Austan Goolsbee expressed encouragement at recent inflation cooling but wants more evidence it's falling back to the central bank's 2% target. Central banks' renewed purchases, particularly from China, have driven gold's recovery above $4,000 an ounce in recent weeks.

Christopher Wong, a strategist at Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp., noted that while positioning is less supportive and technical momentum is starting to look stretched, 'the macro setup has turned more constructive.' He cautioned that consolidation risks remain around current levels.
