GoldBod Buyers in Ghana Face Funding Delays Amid Auction Program Concerns
Ghana's artisanal gold marketing agency GoldBod has been experiencing funding delays, causing some operators to halt purchases or borrow to stay in business.
The issue affects companies licensed to buy gold for GoldBod, which was established in 2025 with exclusive rights to buy, sell and export artisanal gold as part of efforts to curb smuggling and boost foreign currency inflows.
GoldBod's purchases were initially funded by the Bank of Ghana but an IMF call for an end to central bank financing left the agency reliant on commercial banks and gold importers for liquidity.
A foreign exchange auction raised about $75-million, but the Bank of Ghana viewed GoldBod's auction programme as inconsistent with its operating framework, leading both institutions to work together to address concerns.
