GoldBod Ditches Bank of Ghana Buying-Agent Role, Embracing Self-Funded Gold Aggregation
The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has ended its role as a gold-buying agent for the Bank of Ghana, marking a significant shift in the country's domestic gold purchasing programme. Since March 2026, GoldBod no longer receives funds from the central bank to purchase gold on its behalf.
Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi explained that GoldBod has transitioned to mobilising its own financing from commercial banks and gold offtakers to support gold aggregation for export and reserve accumulation. Under the previous structure, the Bank of Ghana bore the costs associated with gold aggregation.
The new arrangement has produced positive results, enabling GoldBod to strengthen its operational independence while continuing to mobilise substantial volumes of gold for export and reserve accumulation. Going forward, GoldBod will engage commercial banks directly to mobilise foreign exchange generated from its gold operations and contribute to liquidity in the foreign exchange market.
