Gold's Fate Hangs in Balance as Jobs Report Looms
Gold is at a critical juncture as it hovers around the $4,000-an-ounce threshold. The US jobs report for July, scheduled for release on August 7, is expected to be a key catalyst in determining whether gold breaks decisively above this level or succumbs to renewed selling pressure.
A firmer dollar has pushed gold prices down 1.54% to $4,098.60 per ounce, but the metal remains about 27% below its 52-week high of $5,626.80 reached in late January. The Federal Reserve's decision to leave benchmark rates unchanged for a fifth consecutive meeting has added uncertainty to the market.
Central banks remain a significant source of demand for gold, with net purchases surging to 288.9 tonnes in the second quarter, a 62% year-over-year increase. However, jewelry demand has slumped 17% year over year, while industrial demand edged up modestly.
