Gold's Unexpected Decline Amidst Rising Oil Prices and Hawkish Fed
Gold prices are experiencing an unexpected downturn amidst rising oil prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The precious metal fell 1.97% to trade at approximately $4,047 per ounce on Friday, defying expectations of safe-haven buying during times of crisis.
The rise in crude prices is fueling inflation concerns, which in turn are reinforcing bets that the Federal Reserve will maintain its hawkish posture and keep interest rates elevated for longer. This dynamic is proving more powerful than the geopolitical turmoil, causing investors to seek alternative assets rather than turning to gold.
As a result, the yield on 10-year US Treasuries climbed to around 4.71%, further eroding gold's appeal as investors can earn a return from bonds instead of holding bullion. The strong dollar also adds pressure on gold prices, making the metal more expensive for holders of other currencies.
Despite this headwind, there are signs of underlying support for gold. Buyers are returning to gold ETCs after weeks of outflows, and Goldman Sachs analysts note that China is likely continuing to build gold reserves covertly at a pace that exceeds official disclosures.
