Grain Exports Return to Port of Churchill After Six-Year Drought

After a six-year hiatus, grain exports have resumed at the Port of Churchill in northern Manitoba. A ship carrying 30,000 tonnes of Canadian durum wheat from Saskatchewan-based AGT Foods is the first vessel to depart since 2020.

The shipment marks the start of a new multi-year partnership between Arctic Gateway Group (AGG), which owns and operates the port, and AGT Foods.

According to Mike Spence, AGG board chair and mayor of Churchill, 'This is what a diversified Port of Churchill looks like.' He highlighted the port's growing importance as a gateway for various commodities, including Prairie grain, critical minerals, and Manitoba potash, heading to international markets.

The return of grain exports to the Port of Churchill has been welcomed by Manitoba's Keystone Agricultural Producers. Rebecca Chartrand, federal minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs, emphasized that the government is focused on building strength at home and diversifying trade, making Canada less reliant on a single trading partner.
