Grain Futures Reel from Midwest Rains, Crude Oil Decline
Soybean futures led grain and oilseed contracts lower in early August as heavy rains across the Midwest and favorable weather forecasts weighed on prices. The sharp decline of crude oil futures, which dropped due to hopes for a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, also contributed to the downturn. However, cuts to European grain production estimates resulting from this summer's heat wave and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine helped underpin grain futures.
China continues to book soybean purchases, offering some support to the market. Traders are positioning themselves ahead of the August 12 USDA Crop Production and WASDE reports, which could provide key insights into the market's direction. Meanwhile, cattle futures faced heavy profit-taking pressure at the end of the week, threatening their recent rebound. Lean-hog futures remained under pressure as the cash hog market continued to weaken.
