Grain Markets Plummet Amid Weather Uncertainty and Speculative Selling

Grain markets experienced another volatile week due to changing weather forecasts, weaker outside markets, and speculative selling. According to Jeff Peterson of Heartland Farm Partners, multiple layers of premium had been added to the market before it began to unwind.

The premium was driven by factors such as weather concerns, crude oil strength, and global shipping risk, but this support disappeared as forecasts turned wetter and geopolitical tensions eased.

Crop condition ratings remain a concern, with corn ratings running well below year-ago levels. Doug Simon of Tredas noted that heat, variable rainfall, and limited subsoil moisture have contributed to crop stress, particularly in the western Corn Belt.
