Grain Markets Plunge on Renewed Tensions Between US and Iran
Global grain markets experienced significant volatility in late July due to geopolitical developments and supply chain disruptions. The conflict between the United States and Iran, which had briefly seemed to be on a path towards a ceasefire, was rekindled, causing investors to rapidly sell off their positions.
The CBOT corn price plummeted 13.5 cents to $4.74, while wheat prices dropped 18 cents to $6.985, with soybean prices falling by the largest margin at 39.75 cents to $12.1375.
Traders' lack of confidence in the market was evident as open interest fell by 29,693 contracts for soybeans and 14,035 contracts for corn.
Meanwhile, the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine led to restricted grain truck deliveries into three Black Sea export facilities, pushing up freight and insurance costs. This has raised concerns about Russian wheat exports over the next one to three months.
