Grain Prices Surge on US Ukraine Diplomatic Deadlock
Grain prices have risen in response to US efforts to end the war in Ukraine, which have yielded little progress. The Chicago wheat futures rose on Tuesday after the US diplomatic efforts failed to secure a breakthrough that would allow Ukrainian and Russian grain to be exported at scale.
The 'tick-for-tick' attacks between Russia and Ukraine against each other's ports, shipping, and shipping lines have brought the Black Sea exports of both countries to a virtual halt. This has prompted buyers to seek alternatives, with Asian wheat importers purchasing Australian and Argentine Wheat in recent deals.
Ukraine had almost finished its 2026 harvest of wheat, with 24.91 million metric tons produced at an average yield of 4.94 tonnes per hectare, according to the agriculture ministry. The Chinese purchase of US soybeans has also increased, with imports totaling 74.11 metric tons in the period January-August, a 1.1% increase over the same period last year.
