Grazing Standing Corn: A Risky but Economical Feed Option for Nebraska Producers

Drought conditions in Nebraska have led to a shortage of pasture and hay for cow herds. Producers are considering grazing standing corn as an alternative feed option, but this requires careful planning and management.

When grazing drought-stressed corn, producers must check herbicide labels for any restrictions on cattle grazing. Nitrates can be a concern, so it's essential to provide clean water and ensure the cattle self-adapt to eating the higher nitrate areas first. Protein supplementation may also be necessary depending on the maturity of the corn and nutrient needs of the cattle.

Strip grazing standing corn can be an efficient way to utilize the crop while minimizing waste. Cattle should be given 2-3 days' worth of feed at a time, aiming for 60-80% grazing efficiency. Typically, cattle will consume 2.5-3% of their body weight on a dry matter basis per day of high-quality forage.

Logistically, temporary electric fencing is necessary to keep cows from knocking down standing corn and shorting out the fence. Having multiple grazing areas ready with built-in fences helps limit cattle escape into the entire field. Virtual fence technology has also been shown to be an effective tool for strip grazing annual forages with containment rates exceeding 98%.
