Greek-Operated Air Defence System Shoots Down Drones Over Saudi Oil Region
A Greek-operated air defence system shot down drones over Saudi Arabia's oil region on Thursday, marking the third time such an operation has been conducted since the US-Israeli war on Iran began.
The incident occurred in the wider Yanbu region, home to major oil refining facilities. The system, a U.S.-made Patriot air defence battery operated by Greek personnel, engaged the drones in coordination with Saudi air defence systems, according to Greek security sources.
Details of the engagement were limited, but it was confirmed that three missiles were launched, although the number of drones downed or their origin was not disclosed. Greece has deployed its system in Saudi Arabia since 2021 under a bilateral defense agreement aimed at protecting the kingdom's energy facilities.
