Grocery Prices Set to Surge as War and Weather Fuel Inflation

Republicans face an uphill battle in the midterms as a 'grocery price shock' looms, threatening to further inflate already-high food costs. According to Axios, a combination of factors is driving up grocery prices, with President Donald Trump's tariffs and war with Iran being major contributors.

The recent poor weather has sent corn and wheat prices soaring to their highest levels in three years, and the ongoing Russo-Ukraine conflict is adding pressure. Wheat is a key ingredient in many pantry staples, and corn is a major animal feed, so as their prices rise, so do those of meat, dairy, and eggs.

The list of already-inflated food items is long: instant coffee is up 15.8% year-over-year, tomatoes are up 12.8%, beef roasts are up 13.5%, and apples are up 11.1%. A report from JPMorgan predicts that global food inflation will accelerate sharply into 2027, growing from 2.8% in the first half of 2026 to around 5% by the first half of next year.

JPMorgan frames the risk around a set of compounding pressures it calls the 'Five Ws': War, Weather, Warehousing, Water, and Waste, with particular emphasis on fertilizer supply disruptions and the potential for a 'super' El Niño event. According to Axios, these forces don't drive up grocery bills overnight but can make an already expensive grocery run even more expensive.
