Gulf Nations Redirect Investment Playbook Amid Iran Conflict
The ongoing conflict in Iran has prompted Gulf nations to re-evaluate their investment strategies and focus on infrastructure development. The war has highlighted the region's reliance on the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for 20% of global oil flows that has been disrupted by Iranian threats.
Trade is being redirected to Saudi ports on the Red Sea and the UAE's eastern ports, but capacity is limited. Gulf governments are exploring ways to create permanent solutions to bypass the strait, including the development of new ports and transportation networks.
Saudi Arabia has fast-tracked plans to build a railway connecting the country with Jordan and Syria, which will reduce reliance on Hormuz. Abu Dhabi's L'IMAD sovereign wealth fund is also revamping AD Ports' strategy after buying out its remaining shares.
