Gulf of Oman Oil Spill Doubles in Size, Threatens Protected Areas

The Gulf of Oman oil spill has doubled in size since Wednesday, posing a significant threat to marine life and protected areas in the region.

According to Nina Noelle of Greenpeace Germany, the visible area of pollution measures about 400 square kilometers (154 square miles) on Thursday, with satellite images showing the spill stretching almost 70 kilometers (43 miles) long.

The spill is located between the Musandam protected area in Oman and the Hara-e Roud-e Gaz Protected Area in Iran's Hormozgan province, which includes mangrove forests.

Noelle expressed concerns that an effective response to the spill is unlikely, citing the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz and past experiences with oil spills since the beginning of the war.
