Gulf Sport in Crisis as Saudi Arabia Postpones Esports Nations Cup
Saudi Arabia's efforts to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on oil and gas have been dealt a blow due to security concerns in the region.
The country was set to host its inaugural Esports Nations Cup, but it has now been postponed until 2027. This is not the first time an event has been relocated or cancelled due to security reasons - earlier this year, the staging of the event was moved from Saudi Arabia to Paris.
While officials claim that taking the event overseas was always part of their plan, the switch came earlier than expected and raises questions about the feasibility of holding large-scale events in the region.
The Esports Nations Cup is one of several initiatives aimed at promoting gaming and esports as a way to diversify Saudi Arabia's economy. The country's sovereign wealth fund has also invested heavily in the sector, including acquiring Electronic Arts for $13.3 billion.
