Hahn & Co. Creates K-LNG by Swapping Fleets of Two Shipping Companies
Hahn & Co., a South Korean private equity firm, is restructuring two shipping companies under its control. SK Shipping and H-Line Shipping will swap fleets to create K-LNG, a larger liquefied natural gas (LNG) platform. The move involves transferring 16 LNG carriers and their contracts to SK in exchange for 12 tankers and approximately $300 million.
This reorganization aims to streamline operations by allocating clearer roles within the companies. SK Shipping will focus on LNG transport, while H-Line will concentrate on tanker and bulk shipping. As a result, Hahn expects SK to become one of the largest LNG carrier operators globally, with 32 LNG carriers and 14 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessels.
This consolidation is expected to provide benefits such as increased efficiency and lower financing costs. The creation of K-LNG may also enable it to bid more credibly for long-term charters and potentially borrow more cheaply, making its earnings less dependent on individual vessels.
