Harmony Crushes Earnings Expectations on Gold Price Bump
Harmony's financial performance has exceeded expectations, with earnings projected to nearly double due to strong operational results and higher gold prices. The company reported that its earnings per share (EPS) for the year ending June are expected to range from 4,050c to 4,450c, representing an increase of between 73% and 90% compared to the previous year. This growth is attributed to Harmony's ability to meet its gold production guidance for the eleventh consecutive financial year, as well as its disciplined cost management.
The company achieved gold production of 1,429,551oz, supported by robust contributions from its South African underground operations and Hidden Valley in Papua New Guinea. Additionally, Harmony maintained all-in sustaining costs (AISC) at $2,195/oz, within guidance. The strong operational performance has translated into significant growth in EPS and robust adjusted free cash flow.
Harmony's diversification strategy is also paying off, with the company's copper production increasing significantly due to the acquisition of MAC Copper last year. The CSA mine in Australia contributed 18,207 tonnes of copper production, towards the upper end of guidance. This growth has been facilitated by a higher gold price received, which increased by 35.3% to $3,811/oz.
Harmony's CEO, Beyers Nel, stated that the company is well-positioned to generate sustainable cash flows and deliver attractive shareholder returns. He noted that the high-quality gold portfolio, growing copper exposure, robust balance sheet, disciplined capital allocation framework, and pipeline of organic opportunities all contribute to Harmony's ability to create value through the commodity cycle.
