Harris Floats Making Alberta 51st State Over Oil Reserves
A U.S. House Republican has suggested making Alberta Canada's 51st state if it were to secede from Canada due to its vast oil reserves.
Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) made the statement on Newsmax's National Report, defending President Donald Trump's aggressive approach toward Canada and other U.S. allies.
Harris pointed to Alberta's separatist movement, which is set to vote October 19 on whether the province should remain part of Canada or proceed toward a later, binding referendum on independence.
Separatists argue that Alberta's oil and gas resources have been constrained by federal policies imposed from Ottawa, particularly environmental rules affecting pipelines and energy development.
