Heat Pumps Gain Ground as Efficient Alternative to Gas-Powered Heating

Heat pumps are gaining popularity as an alternative to gas-powered heating systems due to their efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Unlike traditional boilers, heat pumps extract heat from external sources such as air or ground, making them more energy-efficient.

According to a report, heat pumps can be three to four times more efficient than gas boilers, producing more heat energy than the electricity required to power them. In countries where fossil-fuel-generated electricity is common, heat pumps contribute to carbon emissions, but when powered by renewable energy sources, they become a green heating and cooling system.

Global sales of heat pumps increased by 15% in 2021, with over one-sixth of global natural gas demand being used for building heating. In some countries like Norway, Sweden, and Finland, more than 40% of buildings are equipped with heat pumps, demonstrating their suitability for cold climates.

As the market continues to grow, researchers are improving heat pump technology to make them cheaper and more efficient. In the US, heat pump sales have doubled over the last 15 years, outpacing natural-gas furnaces by 32% in the first quarter of 2026, even after a tax credit for heat pumps concluded at the end of last year.
